Run Flat Tyres

Run-flat tyres are more popular than ever and are now often fitted by manufacturers as standard on new cars. At DP Tyres we stock and fit a wide selection of run-flats at our workshop in Bryn, near Wigan.

So what’s the fuss about run-flat tyres? Why are they so popular?

Run-flat tyres do what you’d imagine, they allow you to continue driving (generally for up to about 50 miles at approx 50 mph but this will vary from vehicle to vehicle) when the pressure in the tyre has dropped. The undoubted benefit of this is that it avoids the panic that we all experience when we get a puncture or a sudden drop in tyre pressure and gives you the opportunity to get to a garage when it’s convenient for you.

Are there disadvantages to run-flat tyres?

Not really, the only real downside is that repairing run-flats generally isn’t an option so if you damage a tyre (they are pretty difficult to damage) or if you get a puncture, you’ll more than likely have to replace the tyres instead of just having it repaired.

Can you use run-flat tyres in any car?

Run-flats can only be fitted to cars that are fitted with a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) – this can automatically sense when the tyre pressure changes and then can alert the driver. If you don’t have a vehicle with TPMS, then you’ll have to stick with standard tyres for now.
