Tyre Tread Checking

The legal minimum tyre tread in the UK is 1.6mm, if you drive with a tyre tread below this you’ll be both breaking the law and compromising your safety. The easiest way to check the tyre tread on your vehicle is to use a 20p piece. The rim of the coin is exactly the right size to determine whether your tyres are good to go or need to be gone.

How do I check the tyre tread?

Get a 20p piece and insert it into the grooves in your tyre. If the coin rim disappears from view, it means that the tyre tread is above the 1.6mm minimum and your tyre is fine. However, if the rim of your coin is visible above the edge of the grooves in your tyre, it means that the tyre is worn and you’ll need to have it replaced.
